Russia likes to present itself as a friend of the Islamic world, and even as part of it through its participation in various international Muslim structures. At the same time, Russia tries to groundlessly suggest that the so-called “collective West” is supposedly responsible for Israel’s crimes, even though it is well known that many Russian oligarchs supporting the Kremlin hold Israeli citizenship. Russia also likes to throw around accusations of hypocrisy and double standards left and right. Yet there is no greater hypocrite than Russia, which mourns and honors the major Serbian war criminal Ratko Mladić, responsible for the genocide of Muslims in Srebrenica. At the same time, another Serbian ally of Russia, known for destabilizing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, is strengthening his relations with Benjamin Netanyahu. After the death of this criminal, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “sincere condolences on the death of the general,” completely hushing up his crimes against Muslims. Many pro-Kremlin and fiercely anti-Western commentators openly praised Mladić, accusing the West of “murdering” him. This is something Muslims should remember.

Who was Mladić, so beloved by Russia?

Ratko Mladić, who served from 1992 to 1996 as Commander of the Main Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), was the chief executor of the ethnic cleansing policy targeted at Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) during the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among his primary crimes (and, according to Russia, achievements) was, above all, the Srebrenica massacre, recognized by the International Criminal Court as a crime of genocide. It is worth recalling that this is the same court that is pursuing Benjamin Netanyahu for crimes in the Gaza Strip, and which is tirelessly slandered by Russia. In Srebrenica in July 1995, on Mladić’s orders, 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were murdered simply because they were followers of Islam. Earlier, Mladić had personally reassured civilians of their safety to lure them out, and then supervised their separation, execution, and burial in mass graves. All of this was later proven in court.

However, this was not Mladić’s only crime. From 1992 to 1995, he directed the nearly four-year siege of Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, in which over 10,000 civilians died, including thousands of Muslims. He employed terror tactics consisting of artillery shelling and sniper actions against the civilian population of a civilian city. He also supervised operations to forcibly displace the Muslim population from the territory of Republika Srpska, the destruction of mosques and cultural heritage, and the establishment of camps (including Omarska, Keraterm, and Trnopolje), where torture, rape, and mass murders occurred. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague sentenced him in 2017 to life imprisonment for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity (a verdict upheld on appeal in 2021). Russia deemed this verdict biased and maintained its vision of Mladić as a hero.

Dodik–Putin–Netanyahu

Milorad Dodik is a key Russian ally in the Balkans who has been destabilizing the political situation there for years at the Kremlin’s request, threatening the peace based on the 1995 Dayton Agreement. Dodik, who served as Prime Minister of Republika Srpska in Bosnia from 1998 to 2001 and from 2006 to 2010, and as its President from 2010 to 2018 and from 2022 to 2025, is simply the ideological successor to the criminal Mladić. European states have imposed financial and visa sanctions on him for undermining the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The charges against him include undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement, pursuing the secession of Republika Srpska, corruption, and downplaying war crimes. In response to his ignoring of the international supervisor’s decisions, a Bosnian court sentenced him in the first instance to prison and banned him from holding public office. However, Dodik continues to enjoy Russia’s diplomatic support.

It should come as no surprise, then, that this fierce enemy of Europe and ally of the Kremlin simultaneously sympathizes with Israeli policy in the Middle East. In March 2025, during a visit to Israel, Dodik wrote that “Israel is proof that freedom and security are priceless,” and that the way “Israel defends itself” is a model for Republika Srpska in Bosnia. In early September 2026, Dodik tightened cooperation with Israel by opening an Israeli Trade Office in Banja Luka, a Bosnian city under his control. This is not purely commercial cooperation, as Dodik again stressed that Israel is a model for Republika Srpska and made no secret of his desire to find an ally against the European Union and its policies in the Balkans. And all of this is happening under the patronage of Russia.
